How the naming pattern works

Thousand is 103. Million begins the “illion” sequence at 106, billion is 109, and trillion is 1012. Every move adds three to the exponent because each new name is 1,000 times the previous one.

Million → billion → trillion → quadrillion → quintillion → sextillion → septillion → octillion → nonillion → decillion.

Googol and googolplex

A googol is 10100, or 1 followed by 100 zeros. It does not sit on an “illion” step because 100 is not a multiple of three. A googolplex is 10 raised to the power of a googol, far too large to write out digit by digit.

A centillion in the short scale is 10303. It is much larger than a googol, even though both names are often used when discussing extremely large numbers.
